Gears of War: E-Day takes the series right back to the beginning. Made by The Coalition and People Can Fly and out since October 6th on Xbox Series X|S and PC, it drops a young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago into the city of Kalona on Emergence Day, fourteen years before the original Gears, on the day the Locust first crawl out of the ground. Around that campaign sits a huge multiplayer side, with the 12-player Horde Siege co-op mode, four Siege classes to level, and 4v4 Versus with its own Ranked ladders.

That's a lot of game, and almost all of it is built around progression. Your Account Level runs to 100 before Re-Up kicks in, every Siege class has its own 30 levels that only move when you play that class, Weapon Mods need Weapon Parts that you only keep if your squad makes it to the Raven, and Ranked asks you to grind Rank Rating from Bronze all the way to Diamond. Then there's the 1,000 Gamerscore, including an Insane campaign and 25,000 Versus kills for Dead Serious.

Most people simply don't have the hours to do all of that. You want to play the fun parts, jump into Allfather Horde with your friends or sweat out a tight Ranked match, not spend your evenings farming Blitz runs for parts or leveling a Medic you don't even enjoy just to unlock a mod.
