Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
What is Thunderfury?
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker is one of the most iconic and powerful legendary weapons in World of Warcraft Classic. It is primarily used by tanks (especially Protection Warriors) due to its threat generation, attack speed, and AoE slow proc.
Stats at a Glance:
- Type: One-Hand Sword
- Bind on Pickup
- Speed: 1.90
- Top Attributes:
- +5 Agility
- +8 Stamina
- +8 Fire Resistance
- +8 Nature Resistance
- Equip Effect: Increases your chance to parry by 6%.
- Proc: A chain lightning + nature damage effect that reduces attack speed by 20%.
Step-by-Step Guide to Obtain Thunderfury
Requirements:
- Level 60
- Access to Molten Core
- Access to Blackwing Lair (eventually for gear and support)
- A guild that is actively raiding MC for drops
- A lot of patience and dedication
Step 1: Farm Bindings of the Windseeker
You need two separate Bindings. These are extremely rare (~3–5% drop rate).
1. Right Half (Bindings of the Windseeker – Baron Geddon)
- Boss: Baron Geddon
- Location: Molten Core
- Drop Rate: ~3%
2. Left Half (Bindings of the Windseeker – Garr)
- Boss: Garr
- Location: Molten Core
- Drop Rate: ~3%
You can loot and hold both Bindings in your bags. Each is soulbound, so only your character can complete the quest.
Step 2: Obtain the Essence of the Firelord
Once you have both bindings, speak to Highlord Demitrian in Silithus (29, 10) to start the quest:
Quest: Thunderaan the Windseeker
Requirements for the Quest:
- Bindings of the Windseeker (Left and Right)
- 10 Enchanted Elementium Bars (see below)
- 10 Elementium Ore
- 100 Arcanite Bars
- 10 Fiery Cores
- 10 Lava Cores
- 1 Essence of the Firelord (from Ragnaros)
Step 3: Create Enchanted Elementium Bars
This is the most expensive and guild-involved step.
To create 1 Enchanted Elementium Bar, you need:
- 1 Elementium Ore
- 1 Arcane Crystal
- 1 Arcanite Bar
- 1 Fiery Core
- 1 Lava Core
You need a Blacksmith with Elementium Smithing, learned from AQ40. If AQ isn't open, you can pre-farm materials.
Alternative: Have an alliance with a guild blacksmith who can make them.
Step 4: Kill Ragnaros and Get the Essence of the Firelord
- This is a 100% drop rate item from Ragnaros, but only if you are on the quest.
- Ensure you’re on the step: “Examine the Vessel” and loot Ragnaros after the kill.
Note: Only one person can loot the Essence per week, so organize this with your guild.
Step 5: Summon and Defeat Prince Thunderaan
Once you have all materials, go back to Highlord Demitrian in Silithus and turn in the quest.
This spawns Prince Thunderaan (elite outdoor boss), a 60+ elite who needs a solid group to defeat.
Boss Notes:
- Immune to crowd control
- AoE knockbacks and damage
- Use frost resistance if possible
- Can be tanked with 15-20 players
When defeated, he drops the Dormant Wind Kissed Blade.
Step 6: Turn in the Blade
Return to Highlord Demitrian once more and turn in the Dormant Wind Kissed Blade.
You’ll be rewarded with:
Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker
Congratulations! You are now the wielder of Thunderfury!
Who Should Use Thunderfury?
Best Classes:
- Protection Warriors: #1 priority (threat generation, tanking utility)
- Protection Paladins: Viable, but less ideal in Classic due to scaling
- Rogues: Not ideal — the proc scales poorly for DPS
Most guilds give priority to main tanks for progression reasons.
Useful Tips
- Start collecting Elementium Ore and Arcanite early.
- Get on your guild’s loot list for both Bindings.
- Be patient — this can take months.
- Coordinate with your guild leaders for crafting and Ragnaros loot scheduling.
- Don't vendor or delete a single Binding if you only have one — it can take dozens of runs for the second to drop.
Trivia
- Saying "Did someone say [Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker]?" became a meme.
- Thunderfury was used by world-first tanks in Classic raids for its AoE threat.
Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
What is Sulfuras?
Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros is one of the two original legendary weapons in WoW Classic, along with Thunderfury. It’s a two-handed mace wielded by Ragnaros the Firelord himself, and it's best suited for Retribution Paladins, Enhancement Shamans, and Warriors (especially for PvP and meme specs).
Stats Overview:
- Type: Two-Hand Mace
- Speed: 3.70
- Damage: 223 - 372
- DPS: ~80.6
- Strength & Stamina bonuses
- Equip Effect: Chance to hurl a fiery ball that deals fire damage and knocks back enemies
How to Obtain Sulfuras
Unlike Thunderfury, Sulfuras is crafted, not looted whole. Here's a full breakdown:
Step 1: Get the Eye of Sulfuras
Item: Eye of Sulfuras
- Drop Source: Ragnaros (Molten Core)
- Drop Rate: ~4–6%
- Bind on Pickup
This is the core ingredient needed to craft Sulfuras. It can take weeks or months to drop due to its rarity.
What to Do:
- Be present for Ragnaros kills.
- Get on the loot list or earn DKP depending on your guild system.
- The Eye is soulbound, so only you can use it once you loot it.
Step 2: Obtain the Sulfuron Hammer (crafted)
Once you have the Eye, you need to craft Sulfuron Hammer, a powerful epic mace used as the base to combine with the Eye of Sulfuras.
Recipe: Sulfuron Hammer
- Learned from Plans: Sulfuron Hammer
- Purchased from Lokhtos Darkbargainer in Blackrock Depths (requires Revered reputation with Thorium Brotherhood)
Sulfuron Hammer Materials:
Material | Quantity |
Dark Iron Bars | 20 |
Blood of the Mountain | 10 |
Fiery Core | 10 |
Lava Core | 10 |
Sulfuron Ingot | 1 |
Essence of Fire | 25 |
Star Ruby | 10 |
Arcanite Bar | 50 |
Many of these items drop in Molten Core or can be crafted/mined.
Additional Notes:
- Sulfuron Ingot: Dropped from Golemagg the Incinerator in Molten Core (~33% chance)
- Dark Iron Bars: Smelted at Dark Iron Forge in Blackrock Depths (requires mining Dark Iron Ore and special training)
- Arcanite Bars: Created by Alchemists with a 48-hour cooldown
This means you’ll likely need your guild’s help collecting mats and cooldowns!
Step 3: Craft the Sulfuron Hammer
Only a Blacksmith with 300 skill and the Sulfuron Hammer recipe can craft this weapon.
- Must use the Black Anvil in Blackrock Depths.
- Plan ahead to clear the path to the anvil or stealth in with a rogue + blacksmith.
You don't need to be a blacksmith yourself — you can bring the materials to someone else.
Step 4: Combine the Eye with Sulfuron Hammer
With both the Eye of Sulfuras and the Sulfuron Hammer in your inventory:
- Right-click the Eye of Sulfuras
- You will be prompted to combine it with the Sulfuron Hammer
- This will create:
Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros
Best Classes for Sulfuras
While not a meta PvE weapon, Sulfuras is iconic and fun to use. Here’s who benefits most:
Class | Reason |
Warrior (Arms/Fury) | PvP burst and meme spec fun |
Retribution Paladin | Good synergy with Seal of Command |
Enhancement Shaman | High burst with Windfury Weapon |
Note: Not ideal for main tanking or hardcore PvE due to lack of tank stats or threat gen.
Bonus: Cosmetic Prestige
- The weapon is massive and iconic — a true flex in capital cities
- Emits a unique fire aura
- Often used by guild leaders or as a reward for loyalty/achievement
Tips for Farming Materials
- Molten Core weekly runs for cores, Blood of the Mountain, Sulfuron Ingot
- Dark Iron Ore farmed in BRD and Searing Gorge
- Essence of Fire drops from fire elementals in Un’Goro, BRD, or AH
- Star Rubies farmed or bought from AH
- Arcanite cooldowns can be coordinated weekly with guild Alchemists
Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian
What is Atiesh?
Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian is a powerful legendary caster staff available in WoW Classic after Patch 1.11, which introduced Naxxramas.
There are four class-specific versions:
Class | Unique Effect |
Mage | +2% spell crit aura for party |
Warlock | +33 spell power aura for party |
Druid | +140 healing aura for party |
Priest | +62 healing and damage aura for party |
All versions grant a clickable portal to Karazhan (1-hour cooldown).
General Requirements
Eligibility
- Only Mages, Warlocks, Priests, and Druids can obtain and equip Atiesh.
- You must be level 60.
- You must raid Naxxramas and Blackwing Lair.
- Requires strong guild support to farm raid materials and kill bosses.
Step-by-Step Guide to Obtain Atiesh
Step 1: Collect 40 Splinters of Atiesh
Item: Splinter of Atiesh
- Drop Source: Bosses in Naxxramas
- Drop Rate: ~33% from raid bosses (including trash drops in some wings)
Each splinter is soulbound and only lootable by eligible classes. Once you collect 40 splinters, the questline begins.
Tip: Most guilds assign one caster (often the most loyal or senior one) to receive all splinters for efficiency.
Step 2: Start the Quest – “Frame of Atiesh”
Once you collect 40 Splinters of Atiesh, the item automatically combines into:
Frame of Atiesh
This begins the legendary quest chain.
Step 3: Visit Anachronos in Caverns of Time
- NPC: Anachronos the Ancient
- Location: Caverns of Time, Tanaris
He gives you the next quest in the chain:
“Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian”
Now, your goal is to cleanse the corrupted staff.
Step 4: Slay C'Thun in AQ40
The staff is corrupted and needs to be purified using a piece of C'Thun.
Objective:
- Kill C’Thun, the final boss of Ahn’Qiraj (AQ40)
- Loot [Base of Atiesh] – guaranteed drop if you're on the quest
This step confirms you've proven yourself against the Old Gods.
Step 5: Kill Kel’Thuzad in Naxxramas
Your next target is Kel'Thuzad, the final boss of Naxxramas.
Objective:
- Defeat Kel'Thuzad
- Loot the [Staff Head of Atiesh] – also guaranteed if you’re on the quest
This completes the core components of the legendary staff.
Step 6: Forge Atiesh
Once you have:
- Frame of Atiesh (from 40 Splinters)
- Base of Atiesh (from C’Thun)
- Staff Head of Atiesh (from Kel'Thuzad)
Return to Anachronos in Tanaris to forge the complete staff:
Atiesh, Greatstaff of the Guardian is yours!
Special Ability: Portal to Karazhan
All versions of Atiesh have a clickable on-use effect:
Teleport Party to Karazhan Crypts (Deadwind Pass)
- 1-hour cooldown
- Note: The actual Karazhan raid was added in Burning Crusade, but in Classic, this is a prestige teleport
Class-Specific Versions
Once forged, the staff becomes soulbound and class-specific. The version depends on your class when you complete the final step:
🪄 Mage Version:
- +2% spell crit aura for party
Warlock Version:
- +33 spell power aura for party
Druid Version:
- +140 healing aura for party
Priest Version:
- +62 spell/healing power aura for party
Stat Overview (General)
- +28 Stamina
- +30 Intellect
- +160 Spell/Healing Power (varies slightly by version)
- Aura effect for your party
- Teleport to Karazhan
Tips for Success
Before You Start:

- Make sure you're the designated recipient of Splinters
- Keep bag space ready for all quest items
Farming Support:
- Coordinate with guild to help farm bosses weekly
- Use Loot Council or DKP to assign splinters fairly
- Don’t miss Kel’Thuzad and C’Thun kills when on the quest step
