Trials are single boss encounters that require 8 players to participate in the raid.
They are unlocked after completing certain feature quests.
There are 4 difficulties for trials: Normal, Hard, Extreme and Unreal.
Hard, Extreme and Unreal trials are called High-End Trials. 
They award equipment and Allagan Tomestones, Endwalker trials award Allagan Tomestone of Aphorism that can be exchanged for Moonward equipment/gear.
There are currently 3 normal Trials and 2 Extreme Trials in the Endwalker expansion.

Trials, especially high-end tier (extreme, unreal) have mechanics that can be either hard or easy to overcome depending on how well you understand them, this of course is connected to how experienced you are.
