Ara-Kara, City of Echoes is a dungeon in The War Within, located in the underground zone of Azj-Kahet. It consists of two main areas connected by waystone checkpoints and features three bosses: Avanoxx, Anub’zekt, and Ki’katal the Harvester. The instance is part of the Season 3 Mythic+ rotation, making it relevant for gearing and progression.
Ara-Kara, City of Echoes Location & Entrance
Zone: Azj-Kahet.
Coordinates: ~52.2, 45.7.
How to Enter:
- From Dornogal, travel east into City of Threads.
- Descend into the web-choked lower tunnels until you reach a vast spider gate, this is the portal to Ara-Kara.
- On the first clear, a Waystone will activate, letting you teleport back more quickly on retries.
Dungeon Layout
Ara-Kara is split into two main zones, with a natural progression forward:
- Echoing Overlook: wide platforms filled with spider swarms and web-casters. This is where you’ll face Avanoxx after clearing mini-bosses.
- Undercache: claustrophobic tunnels that eventually lead to the lair of Ki’katal the Harvester.
Throughout the dungeon, Waystone checkpoints save progress and shorten corpse runs. In Mythic+, this helps groups recover quickly after wipes, but note that each wipe still drains precious time.
Profession Bonus: Tailoring
Silk Thread (Tailoring only): Allows the player to incapacitate spider mobs for 12 seconds.
- Targets: Works on specific spider adds like Trilling Attendants (dangerous scream casts) and Hulking Bloodguards (heavy-hitting brutes).
- Tip: In Mythic+, groups often build routes around the Tailoring CC. If someone has Tailoring, you can skip or neutralize an otherwise deadly pull.
This makes Tailoring the impactful profession inside Ara-Kara, especially for high Mythic+ keys.
Ara-Kara, City of Echoes Trash Mobs
Before you even touch the bosses, trash packs in Ara-Kara are the first real danger. Most wipes happen here if groups don’t respect the mechanics.
First area (before Avanoxx):
- Ravenous Crawlers: leap onto players more than 8 yards away. Stack close to minimize jumps and reduce healer stress.
- Engorged Crawlers / Jabbing Flyers: apply Bleeding Jab, a stacking bleed that ramps up fast. Use defensives and bleed cleanses if available.
- Trilling Attendants: top interrupt priority. Resonant Barrage hits the entire party hard if not stopped. Web Bolt also targets random players and should be interrupted whenever possible.
- Mini-bosses (Ixin, Nakt, Atik): three elites that must die before Avanoxx becomes active.
- Ixin: casts Horrifying Shrill (must be interrupted) and Web Spray, a frontal that leaves puddles.
- Nakt: spawns Ravenous Crawlers on random players with Call of the Brood. Stay grouped so the tank can grab aggro.
- Atik: drops Poisonous Cloud under random players. Avoid it fast. He also casts Poison Bolt on the tank, interrupt if possible, or dispel the poison DoT.
Trash tips:
- Don’t chain-pull the entire room. Take packs in small, controlled groups.
- Assign interrupts before you start.
- Tanks should always face mobs away from the party to avoid cleave or frontal damage hitting DPS and healers.
Ara-Kara, City of Echoes Boss Strategies
Avanoxx
Avanoxx is the first major boss and a check on add control.
- Starved Crawlers: spawn from eggs after Alerting Shrill. If they reach the boss, she consumes them with Insatiable, gaining +50% damage for 60 seconds. Use slows, roots, and cleave them down fast.
- Alerting Shrill: group-wide ticking physical damage. Use defensives and healing cooldowns here.
- Gossamer Onslaught: every player spawns web puddles under their feet each second for 5 seconds. Group them carefully to save space — two puddles can overlap safely.
- Voracious Bite: tank buster that hits three times and applies +50% damage taken for 10s. Use strong defensives here, especially if it overlaps with AoE mechanics.
Strategy: Burn down the Crawlers immediately, manage puddle placement, and time raid cooldowns for Shrill + Onslaught combos. Tanks should rotate cooldowns on Voracious Bite. Using Heroism/Bloodlust on pull helps stabilize the first wave of mechanics.
Anub’zekt
This boss is all about managing adds and positioning.
- Infestation DoT: random players get a poison debuff. When it ends, it spawns Ceaseless Swarm spiders that chase players and apply more DoTs. Drop these away from the group but stay in healer range.
- Webmages: spawn on the edges of the room. They cast Silken Restraints (roots) and Revolting Volley (poison DoT). Tanks should pull them under the boss for cleave; the group must interrupt everything.
- Burrow Charge: targets a ranged player and dashes to them, dealing AoE on impact. Target should blink/dash away, or use a defensive. Assign one ranged “bait” to simplify targeting.
- Impale: frontal strike at the tank. Keep the boss faced away from the raid.
- Eye of the Swarm (100 energy): boss fills the arena with a poison cloud, leaving only a small safe circle in front. Tanks can rotate the boss to reposition this safe zone.
Strategy: Focus on interrupt discipline and add control. Position carefully during swarm phases, and keep Impale pointed away from the group.
Ki’katal the Harvester
The final boss mixes constant AoE damage with survival mechanics.
- Black Blood puddles: spawn from Bloodworkers and some trash mobs. Standing in them roots you and deals damage, but during Cosmic Singularity they’re the only safe zones.
- Cosmic Singularity (100 energy): pulls everyone toward the boss and detonates with AoE. To survive, step into a Black Blood puddle or use an immunity/mobility ability. After the blast, break free quickly, swirlies from Erupting Webs will spawn across the arena.
- Cultivated Poisons: debuffs three players with poison DoT. When it ends, it shoots out poison waves in fixed directions (N/S or E/W). Position carefully to avoid hitting allies.
- Erupting Webs: swirlies under players. Move fast to avoid being trapped, especially if rooted.
- Harvest Essence (enrage phase): Ki’katal channels heavy ticking damage. This is a final burn check, use every cooldown.
Strategy: Using Black Blood puddles correctly during Cosmic Singularity while avoiding swirlies and poison waves. Spread intelligently, rotate defensives, and save cooldowns for the enrage phase.
