Gold is one of the most important and valuable currencies in World of Warcraft. You can purchase some pretty solid gear, mounts, and even game time, and it feels like you always have some use for it. However, it is not always an easy feat to get lots of gold, and not just get it, but get it fast and efficiently. Here are some interesting and good ways to farm a lot of gold and be ready to purchase some interesting and fun items from the Auction House, and finally get to visit the Black Market and spend some hard-earned gold there!
Requirements
What are the requirements to start farming gold? Well, there aren’t many requirements that you need to fulfill before starting your adventure towards getting this shiny currency. One of the most important and pretty much the only one is having a max level character, which is something that most of the players who actively farm and want a lot of gold have. It is also nice to have multiple toons ready to hop in to assist you with the farms. Having multiple characters unlocks some of the weekly methods which you can farm and makes these Raids or similar activities eligible to add to your farming rotation.
You can also pick up a few professions, the most useful ones are Herbalism and Mining, but also Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting. Having some of these professions on each character can speed up the process to get some nice, quick gold! So let’s list some of the best methods where you can utilize the strategies mentioned above.
Best Classes for farming Gold
The best classes to get some gold quickly are the following:
- Druid - It’s probably the best class to farm anything regarding open world or instanced content. Their Flight and Travel forms make gathering herbs fast, and while you’re in the instanced content, you can use your cat form to move faster than some other classes, even if you can’t use the mount in the said raid/dungeon.
- Mage - Having access to the portals and moving from city to city or even continents, helps you access zones and the Auction House pretty fast without having to wait for your Hearthstone cooldown
- Tank Classes - These are pretty useful classes, as once you have access to a tanky and beefy spec such as Protection Warrior or Blood Death Knight, you can freely solo some of the harder, older raids or content that usually might require more people. This makes farming alone far easier.
Best professions to get gold fast
From Herbalism to Jewelcrafting, each profession has some use for the player, but not all of them are quite as useful as the other. Sometimes players ask themselves or other people what they should pick for their main class. Here are some of the best and my favorite professions to get lots of gold in no time:
- Herbalism
- Mining
- Blacksmithing
- Alchemy
- Jewelcrafting
- Engineering
My all-time favorites are both Herbalism and Mining. These professions are the least time-consuming ones, as once you explore the zones and move around doing your own thing, you can utilize them and get some free nodes by not even focusing on them. Turning on the tracking for the nodes, you can freely fly and do repudiation, quests, or kill rares, and in the meantime, collect some freshly mined ores or expensive flowers. This method is especially efficient and one of the, if not the best, when the expansion launches or when a new ore/herb is released during the big patch updates. However, it’s always pretty good, so it can always be good to have on a character you play often.
Other Professions that are also pretty good are Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting. You can take lots of crafting orders and get some nice and fast gold by just making items for other people. On top of that, you can freely craft some mounts with these professions that can be sold on the Auction House, such as Steelbound Harness (Blacksmithing) or Onyx Jeweled Panther (Jewelcrafting).
Alchemy is also an insanely good profession, as people usually need some pots or flasks to progress their weekly Vault with Mythic+ Keys or Raids, so there is always a big demand for these items. Best to pair this profession with Herbalism for maximum efficiency.
Engineering is another good one that also can have some profitable items, mainly mounts you can sell on the Auction House and make some quick profit. These mounts include Sky Golem, Mechano-Hog/Mekgieenir’s Chopper, or Xiwyllag ATV.
Instanced Content Gold Farms
Instanced activities are usually pretty useful for getting some quick gold. Even though there aren’t many such activities, there are still plenty of them that can be useful and quick to use. These activities are the following:
Old Raids
Raids are always an efficient and a fast way to get some gold, even though some of the raids can have low drop chances, having multiple characters makes these things not be as annoying as it seems, as the more things you complete each week, there is bigger chance to obtained the item you’re looking for. Some of the raids that are useful for farming are:
- Tomb of Sargeras
- Temple of Ahn’Qiraj
- Old Naxxramas
- Aberrus
Old Naxx is specifically stated as you would need to do prerequisites to unlock it, where you can then farm Tier 3 Armor Sets, including some of the reagents for crafting the same sets that can also be sold on the Auction House.
ToS and Ahn’Qiraj can drop a lot of expensive BoEs that you can sell on the auction house. For some raids, it’s notable to say that you should loot all the items that you farm and vendor them. These things offer you some raw gold that at first doesn’t seem that high, but once you do it many times, it spikes up! There are also some pets that you can get, which can also be worth a solid amount of gold. For example, raids such as Icecrown Citadel (Normal) can drop Drudge Ghoul pet or Bastion of Twilight, which can drop Twilight Summoning Portal, which awards you with the Faceless Minion pet.
Aberrus, being one of the more challenging ones from the mentioned ones, is also farmed differently. You would go in and kill ONLY the first boss (You can do LFR, Normal, Heroic, or Mythic) - Your goal is to obtain BoE shoulders (Cloth) from trash mobs. Even if you can’t really reset the raid in 20-30 minutes, waiting outside after clearing all available trash mobs after the first boss, they will respawn, and you can go back to farm this incredible transmog item that also can sell for hundreds of thousands of gold.
New Raids
Once the brand new raid comes out, it can be a useful way to get LOTS of gold very fast. BoE items are usually very expensive once the new tier of raid launches. These items not only cost a lot, but they also sell fairly fast. Even if it has been some time since the raid launched, as long as it is the latest content, the items that drop as BoEs are still worth a lot of gold. Your goal would be to get into Heroic or Mythic trash mobs BoE farm groups.
There are plenty of these groups or communities available all the time, or if there aren't any, you can form a group yourself and start getting players. It usually consists of clearing the first floor or wave of trash mobs before the first boss of the raid. It’s usually done on Heroic, as the Mythic would require a full group from the same realm; However, both work with Mythic being far more expensive once the item does drop for you.
Old Dungeons
Unlike raids that have a weekly lock, a lot of dungeons on normal difficulty don’t have such an issue. So they are an activity that you can replay constantly, and you don’t even need to have multiple characters. Dungeons are usually far easier than raids (So even if it’s a bit hard to complete 1 expansion's old raids solo, dungeons shouldn’t be an issue, even for some dungeons on normal difficulty that are current content).
The best dungeons to focus on are the following:
- Uldaman (Farming rare BoE items, that can be sold for a huge amount of gold)
- Razorfen Kraul (It’s one of the fastest ones that can also drop lots of BoEs)
- Pit of Saron/Halls of Reflection (Killing a lot of trash mobs on Heroic difficulty of this dungeons is another good method, despite Heroic usually being locked daily, not killing a boss allows you to freely farm trash mobs for a chance to obtained Battered Hill, that starts a quest for amazing Sword Quel’Dalar)
Open World Gold Farms
Even if the raids and dungeons have lots of big methods, open-world content is not dry either. From insane transmog BoE Drops to cool and fun mounts, there are so many ways to get the gold quickly and efficiently. We already mentioned the gathering professions that can be one of the most useful things to have, so it’s a good thing to have Mining and Herbalism while doing something in the open world.
Many zones in Azeroth have unique things, and each one of them has something. Not all of them have efficient methods that you can use and profit from, but lots of them do.
Mounts
Let’s start with some interesting mounts that cost plenty of gold on the market:
- Captured Dune Scavenger (Voldun, killing mobs with a low % chance for a drop)
- Chewed-on Reins of a Terrified Pack Mule (Drustvar, another one with a lower drop rate)
- Goldenmane’s Reins (Tiragarde Sound or Stormsong Valley, farming mobs for a chance to get this stellar stallion)
Despite their lower drop rate, these mounts can be farmed easily alone, and once you do get a drop, you can sell them for over 100.000 gold depending on your server.
Pets
Another great method for getting our favorite shiny currency is by getting some of the rarer pets that are spread throughout many zones of Azeroth!
Here are some of the most profitable pets that you can get:
- Disgusting Ooze (A pretty rare pet, that you can get from the Oozing Bag located in the Swamp of Sorrows)
- Emerald Whelping (Another insanely low drop chance, but expensive pet that can be found in Feralas)
Transmog/BoE/Raw Gold
Another great method is to look for rare open-world items such as transmogs (BoEs). Even though this is not one of the preferred farms by many people, it still has some advantages, from some drops of green items that are uncommon, but occur often to sell them on the auction house, to expensive and luxury items. There are always similar zones during the launch of every new expansion, and TWW is no different. Azj’Kahet has something similar located at Siegehold. Here, you usually have some elite mobs that seem to not have so much HP as your average elite mobs, while they drop lots of green items, including a solid amount of raw gold for open-world mobs.
Another one is located at the notorious Shadowlands zone Zereth Mortis, in the Sand part, located near the Dread Portal part of the zone. The location is filled with another set of elite mobs (They were challenging during Shadowlands, but now are trivial). These mobs drop a lot of pretty unique and nice-looking green items of one of Shadowland’s most beloved Broker-themed sets. On top of that, the prized possession of this zone, secret weapon transmog, Varruth’s Guillotine. This weapon is actually hidden in the transmog tab, and you can’t even find out about it by looking through weapon transmogs. Many players might’ve missed such a weapon if they hadn’t actively played 9.2 during Shadowlands. It can go for an abysmal amount of gold, going up to 500.000 golden shines!
Questing
The method that’s probably one of the least profitable ones, but still can net you some gold, is questing. It’s one of the oldest methods to earn some extra gold, but it can be a really fun way to explore the zones and learn about the lore. On top of that, you would be doing achievements such as Loremaster for each zone and eventually the main one as well. With this method, you can obtain lots of vendorable items alongside the raw gold from quest rewards.
Auction House Manipulation/Flipping
This is one of the harder methods, but also one of the most profitable ones if done correctly. It does require you to study the market a bit and look at the prices and items that sell fast and that you can take full control of. Even if it does take lots of time, eventually, once you get the hang of it, you can start earning millions of gold.
This method works simply by buying items for a lower price, getting the whole stock on your market, and then reselling them at the price you decide. You would need to control the market for a little while and try to sell as much of your stock as possible for a higher price than what you bought for. Obviously, this is quite risky, doesn't always work, and you need to study it carefully and make sure you are available and online, undercutting every single listing.
Alternatively, if you watch the market carefully all the time, and you are updated with the trends and the usual prices, you can try buying low on certain days of the week where the demand is low, and try to sell the items you bought for a higher price on days when the demand is higher, such as reset days.
With a lot of items now freely transferable through realms, you can also use multiple realms to look at the prices, potentially buy it on one realm for a cheaper price and then sell on your realm if it’s higher, without the need to buy every stock of the item that’s available on your server. A Helpful addon for this is Trade Skill Master (TSM). It can help you get a grip on all prices of items more easily on the market and see what you can control.

Farming gold can be exhausting and indeed time-consuming. Hopefully, this guide will bring you some valuable tips that you might need in your future adventures. One of the best final tips we can give is that you should have more than one character. Multiple alts can sometimes ease the farm. However, focusing on having one character for some of the End-game farms can also be very useful. Farming gold early in the expansion or the patch is one of the best ways to have fast and guaranteed gold as quickly as possible. With professions such as Herbalism and Mining, you can earn lots of gold with just a little farm, and farming current content raid for BoEs is one of the most underrated farms in our opinion, and you should always take advantage of the new raid to achieve that.
Also having characters on multiple realms is now a viable strategy, due to that you can now freely transfer your items from one to the other character, looking for a price of the item you want to sell on the Auction House to maximize the profit and have solid chance in returning any investment you may or may not made with flipping the Auction House. Keep in mind that most materials are region-wide, and not server wide as it used to be.
